Every now and then when someone mentions “Johnny Thunders,” I marvel at the fortune I had to have “jammed” with him on numerous occasions. He wanted me to perform with him – Asking me directly, a couple times. Sadly, I never did publicly. Just being asked by him, however, is something of which I am most proud and grateful.
Having worked at the world famous Electric Lady Studios, I’m sure Jimi visits. A trampling down the staircase was a frequent occurrence in the middle of the night. I would awake startled from overnight session catnaps, only to find no one there.
I’ve also had the true pleasure of working with McGhee Entertainment — Former management of Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Skid Row, The Scorpions and currently still – Kiss.
During that time, I was fortunate enough to briefly join U2’s Zooropa tour in Italy, Pearl Jam was also on that bill. That hot day in Rome, I witnessed 80,000 humans being hosed down as a cooling method, by a fire-truck in the stadium – What a site that was!
I’ve landed friends auditions from a Volkswagen commercial (He got it!) which wound up receiving a great deal of airplay, to an audition with The Ramones when they were seeking a new bassist (This might be the coolest thing I’ve ever done in my life).
Randomly, I’ll get strange calls, like…a director friend asking if I’d purchase kimonos for the drag queen den mother in Paris Hilton’s, “Pledge This” movie.
Yes, I am the same Sara D’Arce who choreographed & toured with La India — The princess of salsa — Early in La India’s (Then, known as “India”) dance music career.
Touring with “India,” gave me the very special experience of numerous performances at Studio 54, The Palladium and other great New York (Miami, Puerto Rice & Los Angeles, too) venues, which includes The Apollo Theatre for MTV International. It was the 80’s, I now consider this blackmail material, kindly refrain from “Googling!”
The first time I ever played “hooky,” was to be at Roxy (NY not LA) for the filming of “Beat Street” – One of the first (& best, in my opinion) Hip Hop movies of all time.
Finally, I have also had the incredible privilege of working under Gary Kurfirst for a brief time (Who’s roster has included: The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Jane’s Addiction, Tom Tom Club, Thompson Twins, Deee Lite, Eurythmics and a host of others). Gary later founded Radioactive Records and is the Kurfirst in Kurfirst-Blackwell Entertainment. RIP Gary Jurfirst — A pioneer who fostered an entire genre. I aspire.
These are a few of my experiences mostly around (but sometimes in) our music industry for the last thirty years – And none of it actually means anything, except that I have led an itsy, bitsy, tiny bit of a charmed life.
For this, I am deeply grateful.
Please PARTNER with me, in my mission of changing the world for the better, through the concert industry.
